Ukraine demands Russia immediately stop 'passport aggression'

Ukraine demands Russia immediately stop 'passport aggression'
2 of May 2019 г.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has condemned the Kremlin's decision to simplify the procedure for granting Russian citizenship to Ukrainian citizens, noting that this is another fact of the flagrant violation by Russia of the norms of international law and state sovereignty of Ukraine.

The ministry said this in a statement posted on its website on May 1.

"Russian presidential decree No. 187 of April 29, 2019 'Concerning certain categories of foreign citizens and stateless persons who have the right to apply for the citizenship of the Russian Federation in a simplified manner,' which was published today, as well as all previous and possible future legal acts of the Russian Federation aimed at granting Russian citizenship Ukrainian citizens in an unlawful manner, have been, are and will be legally null and void, will not have any legal consequences and will not be recognized by the Ukrainian side," the statement reads.

The ministry emphasized that the declared goal of these decisions - "protection of human rights and freedoms" – is particularly cynical. After all, the rights and freedoms of Ukrainian citizens were grossly violated with the beginning of Russia's armed aggression and occupation by the Russian Federation of part of the sovereign territory of Ukraine - the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, Sevastopol, as well as certain areas of Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

In this regard, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry strongly demanded that the Russian side immediately lift all unlawful decisions regarding the issuing of Russian passports to Ukrainian citizens and eliminate their negative consequences.

"Ukraine reserves the right to take effective measures to protect national security, legitimate rights and interests of Ukrainian citizens in accordance with international law and Ukrainian legislation," the ministry said.

The statement notes that the Ukrainian side will continue to work actively with international partners to strengthen consolidated sanctions pressure on the Kremlin regime. Foreign diplomatic institutions of Ukraine were instructed to immediately inform foreign capitals about Russia's "passport aggression."

"We expect our international partners to increase sanctions against the Kremlin regime," the statement reads.

It also notes that a respective note of protest will immediately be sent to the Russian Foreign Ministry.
