18 of April 2019 г.
The Lefortovsky District Court in Moscow extended the arrest of all Ukrainian sailors, who had been captured during the attack in the Kerch Strait last year.

Viktor Bespalchenko, Vladyslav Kostyshyn, Volodymyr Varymez and Serhiy Chuliba will stay in remand prison until July 24, Hromadske reports.

The identical verdicts were pronounced in relation to Bohdan Nebylytsia, Yuriy Budzil, Volodymyr Lisovy, Yuriy Bezyazychny, Oleh Melnychuk. The arrest of wounded sailors – Andriy Artemenko, Andriy Eyder, Vasyl Soroka – was extended until July 26.

The prosecution requested to extend the arrest, underscoring the need for obtaining the results of forensic tests.

The defense stated that the Ukrainians are the prisoners of war and should be released. The lawyers also noted that the capture of the sailors was a fact of aggression of the Russian Federation.

The sailors themselves answered only the questions about their name, age, and rank, emphasizing that they are the prisoners of war in accordance with the Third Geneva Convention.

Earlier, the arrest of Roman Mokriak, Andriy Oprysko, Yevhen Semidotsky, Serhiy Tsybizov, Volodymyr Tereshchenko, Bohdan Holovash, Serhiy Popov, Andriy Shevchenko, Denys Hrytsenko, Vyacheslav Zinchenko, Mykhailo Vlasiuk and Andriy Drach was extended.

On April 17, the court hearings on the extension of arrest of 24 Ukrainian prisoners of war were held in the Lefortovsky District Court in Moscow

On November 25, 2018, Russian security forces seized three Ukrainian Navy vessels in the Kerch Strait and captured 24 Ukrainian servicemen. Three of them were wounded in the attack.

Russian-controlled "court" in the occupied Crimea arrested all Ukrainian servicemen for the alleged illegal border crossing. Now they are held in the Lefortovo remand prison. All the detained Ukrainian sailors declared themselves the prisoners of war.

On January 24, 2019, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe adopted a resolution, calling on Russia to treat Ukrainian captured sailors in accordance with the Geneva Convention on Prisoners of War.
