Ukrainian government approves national anti-corruption strategy

Ukrainian government approves national anti-corruption strategy
16 of Septeber 2020 г.
The Cabinet of Ministers has supported the national anti-corruption strategy for 2020-2024 developed by the National Agency on Corruption Prevention (NACP), taking into account technical and legal amendments.

The decision to that effect was made at a government meeting on September 16, according to an Ukrinform correspondent.

"We saw the presentation last time [at the September 9 meeting]. We had time to work with the document, so now there is a proposal to support the document with a one-day revision in the Secretariat of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, taking into account the announced technical and legal amendments," Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said after the vote.

Earlier, presenting this item on the agenda, NACP Chairman Oleksandr Novikov said that the document was really inclusive, because all ministries were working on it.

"The previous strategy, according to objective estimates, gave an additional six percent of GDP. This strategy, according to our calculations, will reduce the cost of corruption in the amount of up to UAH 200 billion," Novikov said.

He asked government members to support the anti-corruption strategy with minor modifications, in particular, taking into account additional proposals received from the judiciary.

The National Agency on Corruption Prevention presented a draft national anti-corruption strategy for 2020-2024 at a meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers on September 9.

A targeted approach was used to draw up the strategy. In particular, priorities were determined based on the opinion of citizens, business, experts, an analysis of the effectiveness of anti-corruption policy, expert research, international practices, Ukraine's commitments under the United Nations Convention against Corruption and European conventions, open professional and public discussions. As a result of this analysis, eight priorities of the national anti-corruption strategy were identified.
