Opening of EU borders to Ukrainians depends on COVID-19 statistics

Opening of EU borders to Ukrainians depends on COVID-19 statistics
5 of June 2020 г.
Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba believes that the EU countries will open their borders to Ukrainians after the "slight improvement" in COVID-19 situation in Ukraine.

"We negotiate with all countries of interest to Ukrainians as destinations they plan to travel to this summer. There are no problems with trust in statistics, no problems with trust in the number of tests when these countries make decisions on admitting Ukrainian citizens," Kuleba said during an hour of questions to the Government in the Parliament, commenting on allegations of EU’s distrust of Ukrainian morbidity rate, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

The problem is the number of cases itself as the EU has set a certain limit on the number of patients per 100 thousand of population, the minister explained.

"We are very close to this threshold. A slight improvement in the situation in Ukraine will allow us to meet the standards, and the entry to Ukrainians will be allowed," Kuleba said.

As a reminder, the complete ban on entry of tourists from outside the EU is valid until June 15, after which the EU member states will impose restrictions only for tourists from certain countries.

As of June 5, Ukraine has reported 25,963 laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 cases, including 553 new cases over the past day.

In total, more than 6.7 million coronavirus cases have been confirmed worldwide, including 393,000 deaths and more than 3.2 million recoveries.
