Ian McKellen has discussed why he chose to come out of the closet at the age of 49 in 1988, and why he hid his sexual orientation for so long.
He is the subject of Ian McKellen: A Biography by Gary O'Connor, who met the Lord of the Rings actor at Cambridge University in 1958, which describes the actor as 'intensely private.'
