Joaquin Phoenix 'didn’t refer to any past iterations of The Joker' in playing the role.
The 44-year-old actor plays the titular character in the latest movie to explore the iconic DC Comics supervillain, and has said he was drawn to the role because of how 'hard to define' he is.
